wisdom like a scalpel
This book is hard to come by. Without the Princeton University Press Legacy reprint series, it’s tough luck tracking this down at even a used bookstore. Valéry’s genius is luminous here, in its aphoristic form. Worth buying, annotating, aspiring to.

Updated and expanded edition: worth the buy
The annotations here, expanded from the first edition of the collected poems, are worth the price of admission. Remarkable also is the inclusion of Gisèle Celan-Lestrange's engravings. Altogether: the best possible route into Celan's allusive genius.
