A great family film!
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich The family film is today a dead art. "The secret garden" is adapted seriously from a classic of English literature, and features an excellent cast including Maggie Smith. It's score is cinematic and affecting, and it's direction is sure and creates a sense of mystery and adventure from the very first frame. A favourite of T.S. Eliot, the story is about a young British girl, "Mary, quite contrary" who grew up in India and who must learn to live in the Gothic manor of her uncle when her parents, who neglected her emotionally, die in an earthquake. When she discovers a garden that has been locked away for years, it becomes her only escape to a better world; however, the film is never morose. It has moments of comedy, especially from Mary's maid, and the film focusses on the actions and relationships of the children as they explore the secret garden. The film does not forget the novel's great language, present in its screenplay, or its themes of magic, spirituality and love. Seamlessly exploring dark adult worlds of grief and oppression alongside the curiosity and joy that love, nature and mystery brings to the children of the story, all of whom have been abandoned in some way, "The Secret Garden" is a masterpiece. Currently only available on DVD - I have not encountered it on any streaming services - do not hesitate to get a copy for the home.
