Informative, easy read. Author's conservative bias is forgivable.
0 von 1 finden das hilfreich Kempe is a very easy to read and informative writer, and this is a fascinating book that reveals much of what we lived through, but were kept completely in the dark about, during these "innocent" years.
The author's only stumble is that he is very anti-Kennedy, and his conservative bent gets in the way of creating an unbiased chronicling of events.
I would so have preferred none of his personal beliefs coloring the story, and let the reader draw his/her own conclusions, but statements like "that was Kennedy's first mistake...", are clumsy and deter from the narrative. They also make me doubt the veracity of a lot of the "facts" and the way they are laid out by the author.
And, all that said, he's a good enough author and it is an amazing enough story, that I can forgive the bias.
We were close to World War III, and to having our lives forever changed by hundreds of millions of deaths... and the decisions rested between a man who many would say was quite mad, and others might say was full of bravado, but not much wisdom.
A good good to peruse is "Legacy of Ashes", by New York Times author Tom Weiner. It is a book on the CIA's exploits of the time, based de-classified papers, because on the Freedom of Information Act.
Wiener is a liberal author, but you do get the sense that the Kennedy brothers were on the verge of taking the whole world into nuclear horror...because of terrible intelligence, but also because of their hubris. The great thing is that Weiner lets you make your own judgments about the Kennedys.
I'm starting to think that Kruschev was the real hero of the era. He was extending his hand to Kennedy well before he became President, and was the one who suggested that nuclear war could be avoided by the US removing it's warheads from Turkey, and the USSR would remove the warheads from Cuba.
Amazing times, and this book is, though flawed, an excellent look at a piece of the puzzle.
