Great sound and noise-cancelling, but an additional amplifier is a must.
A couple of years ago I stopped listening to music outside - the rumbling of cars around made it almost impossible to hear any music behind it. Turning the volume really loud doesn't help much - you still loose bits and pieces of your favourite track due to all the noise around. Then noise-cancelling appeared. I heard a few good things about Sennhiser headphones and even more about their NoiseGuard system (they say it's not the best one available in the market, but the only one worth looking at below 300$). A few searching, waiting and saving and I got a chance to buy these - PXC-250. I did read a few things about them beforehand, so it wasn't a surprise, when they sounded really quite. They have quite a high impedance, which leads to less distortion but requires more power to sound good. So you are left with two options - either plugging them into a PC/laptop/stereo system (which seems silly) or getting a portable headphone amplifier. I got a 7$ worth FiiO amplifier and now this combo works wonders for me. Good bass, clear mid and high frequencies, good volume level? much better than my previous Koss headphones. I don't even have to turn the volume to its maximum on my player/phone - it's actually well below the middle in most cases. And if there is noise interfering - NoiseGuard is there to help. Yes, now I can hear the subtle tones in David Bowie's Earthling, while sitting in raging_bull_roaring bus or listen to the hard beats of KMFDM, while walking in a crowded mall. You'd be amazed how much noise there is around if you take them off in the middle of the track - and then there is almost none if you put them back on. Even more - the are easily foldable and come with a good bag (with a useful spare pocket - just right for that amplifier). Things you should be aware of are: - NoiseGuard doesn't suppress all of the noise. If a car rushes by you - you'll hear it, but only when it comes 5-6 meters near you, so it's just 0.5 secods of background noise instead of 10 seconds of noise that is a lot louder than your music. - They sound louder when NoiseGuard is on, but it consumes power, so it's for you to decide - spare some power in the headphones by turning the Suppression off, or in your player by decreasing volume with suppression on. - The cables seem to be slightly short and rigid, which might get uncomfortable sometimes. - My headphones were not new ones (store sample, but hey it's 100$ instead of 300$) and when I got them there was no sound in the right ear, but only until volume reached some higher power. After that everything worked fine and you could decrease volume without loosing your right phone. So you might really need an amplifier to run them at least stereo. Still it might have been just my used item. It repeated a few times, but didn't come up after that.
