Out-dated "Country Cousin" Handbags
I was very disappointed with this book: Most of the bags and, especially, the embellishments are out-dated and amateurish. I purchased it without being able to view much except the cover and the table of contents which featured pictures of what appeared to be a drawstring bag from recyled jeans, but was, in fact, a backpack; a tote of some sort; a neat patchwork bag; and a couple of other tote type bags. Since all the fabrics except the denim looked like cotton prints, I was prepared for "country style" bags, but the cover promised "30 stylish bags and...accessories," so I expected a variety of styles and embellishment techniques that could be adapted to other fabrics to make more chic handbags. That was not the case. All of the bags and accessories are fashioned in a manner that almost instantly proclaims them "homemade" rather than fashionably "handmade." There are no unique styles or embellishments. Ten pages or so are devoted to instructions for a few common decorative stitches; very simple applique, patchwork, and quilting techniques; and the simplest of embellishments--which might be helpful to a person just learning to sew, but for an accomplished seamstress, this book offers very little.
