Classic Weavers Christmas in pristine quality, hidden in terrible budget-release packaging
This is an authorized MCA cheapo reissue of the Weavers' rare-ish 1951 Decca (USA) 10-inch Christmas album. I highly recommend it.
It sounds to me like it's a flat transfer. In other words, they just took the original mono 1951 master tape - which is in fantastic condition by the way - and transferred it to disc with no futzing whatsoever. (And yes, that means they made no attempt to remove the tape hiss either. Most audiophiles will tell you that's a good thing!) As with many CDs from the era before the loudness wars, you might find yourself needing to turn up the volume relative to newer, "loudened" CD masterings. Also be aware that, since it was a 10-inch album, it's very short - around 25 minutes.
The cover art on this CD is just awful, and looks for all the world like one of those nasty-sounding unauthorized public-domain cheapo discs that litter the ebay landscape these days. No liner notes either, other than song titles and composers. And that's a shame, because this is an excellent quality CD reissue of a much-sought-after album, made from the record company's master tapes, with some absolutely magical Christmas music!
