Solid performer for the price
Better than the previous version in terms of mechanics, noise and tactile feedback. The stepper motor (STM) allows for quick silent autofocus that is optimized for smooth video focus smoothing. The precious non STM version was noisy (not good for video) and not as positive in its focus acquisition.
Mechanically the zoom ring is smoother, feels more precise and free of roughness. Same with the focus ring which is wider and easier to grip.
Optically the lens is capable of quality results as long as one finds a copy of this lens that was properly assembled and the lens elements are properly centred. Because of its low cost there probably is minimal quality control at the factory.
Canon’s image stabilization is not affected by the low cost of this lens and performs well which is a good thing since this lens has a small maximum aperture.
