a beautiful glimpse behind the mask
So terrible was his appearance that the "Elephant Man" had to wear a mask in public, yet beneath it he was a gentle, even lovable man who forgave those who tormented him.
This book is a compassionate, well-written biography of The Elephant Man, who had a short career as a freak in Victorian London. His real name was Joseph Carey Merrick, though his friend and doctor Frederick Treves calls him "John" in his unforgettable account The authors of this book combine medical facts about Merrick's life with authentic photos, but reads almost like a riveting novel. Very enjoyable and enlightening, leading to a greater understanding of the life and legacy of Joseph Merrick, as well as those among us who suffer from disability and deformity. This book is a must-read!
