Adventurous Listeners Need Only Apply!
My exposure to Soft Machine consisted of 1 track from a sampler L.P. purchased back in the late 60's.
With that as a disclaimer. I must say that when I discovered them in the late 90's, I was more than just a little impressed. 1 & 2 were amazing works, but "Third" was Stunningly good. Originally released as a 2 L.P. set with 1 track per side, it was an ambitious project. Bridging the gaps between rock, jazz and avant gard psychedelia.
Track 1 "Facelift" is an incredible live performance. Apparently culled from 2 shows and edited together. Think early King Crimson on acid. Drone, distortions and rhythms with a chaotic horn section and yet retaining a cohesiveness. Remarkable!
Track 2 "Slightly All The Time" could be best described as a fusion piece, yet not one of those early over indulgent exercises that marred that whole genre.Challenging tempo changes, change the very texture of the movement.
Track 3 "Moon In June" The vocal track. This is the rock influenced piece, again not standard stylization, just influenced. You hear the definite English Psychedelic influence and tongue in cheek lyrical content. Could Wyatt be poking a finger in the eye of his pretentious contemporaries?
Track 4 "Out Bloody Rageous" is 19:13 of pure bliss. My favorite track. Starting soft and slow, brewing a bewitching swirl of sound that carries you off into the Musical landscape that is the "Softs" jazzier side. This is definitive headphone music, that will deliver the goods, for those looking for adventurous, out of the box compositions. I heartily recommend that if you've not heard the Soft Machine, 1: you listen to the first 2 releases. 2:Then treat yourself to this challenging piece. It's Brilliant!
