One of the All-Time Best Films.
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) Director John Houston’s masterpiece film about three American prospectors in Mexico in search of gold in the Sierra Madre Mountains. Based on a novel by writer B. Traven. Classic performances by actors Humphrey Bogart as Fred C. Dobbs, Walter Huston as Howard and Tim Holt as Curtin. Lessons to be learned about human greed and its ultimate cost. Actor Alfonso Bedoya steals the show as the bandit ‘Gold Hat.’ Outstanding, iconic screenplay by John Huston with many quotable moments. “I don’t have to show you any stinking badges.” (Bedoya) Dynamic soundtrack by Max Steiner. Astute cinematography by Ted McCord. Definitely one of the all-time best. Grade A+

Great Film!
City Lights (1931) One of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of all time. Written, directed, and starring Charlie Chaplin as his iconic “down-and-out” Tramp character. Filmed with a synchronized soundtrack of music and sound effects (but no dialogue), City Lights is still Chaplin’s magnum opus. As the tramp walks the city streets one day, he meets a blind flower girl and feels sorry for her. When he finds out she and her grandmother are going to be evicted by their landlord, the poverty-stricken tramp steps in to help. Fortunately, the tramp meets a drunken millionaire and is ultimately able to procure to necessary money to, not only pay the rent, but to also pay for an operation needed by the flower girl to restore her sight. Wonderful musical soundtrack by Charlie Chaplin and songwriter, Jose Padilla, who composed the flower girl’s theme music. Strong supporting performances by actors Virginia Sherrill as the flower girl and Harry Myers as the alcoholic millionaire. Lessons to be learned about the art of giving, and the inherent power of human kindness. Film is replete with iconic comedy scenes that are amazingly performed, namely the scenes when the tramp saves the millionaire’s life at the dock, and the hilarious boxing match. The ending is perhaps the greatest in all of film history. Have a box of Kleenex handy. Grade A+

Horrifying and Entertaining Film.
The Beast with Five Fingers (1946) Horror /Mystery film starring actor Peter Lorre, who gives an over-the-top performance as the insane killer, Hillary Cummins. Based on a short story by W.F. Harvey. Interesting story-line about a one-handed concert pianist, Francis Ingram, who dies mysteriously in his large manor house in Italy at the turn of the 20th Century. As the film progresses, strange occurrences begin to take place in his house. Great special effects and cinematography by Wesley Anderson. Classic postwar film that is both horrifying and entertaining. Strong performances by actors Robert Alda as Bruce Conrad, Andrea King as Julie, Ingram’s nurse, and Victor Francen as Francis Ingram. Memorable soundtrack music by Max Steiner. Directed with flair by Robert Florey. Actor J. Carrol Naish steals the show as the Commissario. Grade B
