One of the All-Time Best Films.
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) Director John Houston’s masterpiece film about three American prospectors in Mexico in search of gold in the Sierra Madre Mountains. Based on a novel by writer B. Traven. Classic performances by actors Humphrey Bogart as Fred C. Dobbs, Walter Huston as Howard and Tim Holt as Curtin. Lessons to be learned about human greed and its ultimate cost. Actor Alfonso Bedoya steals the show as the bandit ‘Gold Hat.’ Outstanding, iconic screenplay by John Huston with many quotable moments. “I don’t have to show you any stinking badges.” (Bedoya) Dynamic soundtrack by Max Steiner. Astute cinematography by Ted McCord. Definitely one of the all-time best. Grade A+

Classic American Sci-Fi
Invaders from Mars (1953) Quintessential 1950’s Sci-Fi camp classic, directed by William Cameron Menzies. From a story by John Tucker Battle. A young boy wakes up in the middle of the night and sees a flying saucer land in his family’s backyard. Is it a real invasion from Mars, or is it all just a dream? The ensuing story of townspeople being sucked underground by Martian mutants, and returning as killers, is a compelling cinematic premise. Mostly geared towards children and teenagers in the early 50’s, it is still a highly entertaining film for adults as well. Perfect Saturday matinee film. “B Movie” performances by actors Jimmy Hunt as David MacLean, Lief Erickson as George MacLean, and Helena Carter as Dr. Blake. Film is replete with surreal, dream-like set designs and ingenious cinematography by John F. Seitz. Actress Luce Potter steals the show as the Martian inside the Glass Globe. Film plods at times, especially when the U.S. Army comes to the rescue. Outstanding soundtrack music composed by Raoul Kraushaar and Mort Glickman, especially the ethereal-sounding choral music used for the Martians. Grade B

Stunning Production. Unforgettable film.
The Miracle Worker (1962) Director Arthur Penn’s stunning film rendition of the stage play, written by William Gibson. Though the story is based on Helen Keller’s 1903 autobiography, the film is actually about her childhood teacher, Anne Sullivan. Hired to be Helen’s tutor, Sullivan patiently teaches an out-of-control Helen how to sit properly at the dinner table, not to mention the meanings of words using hand signs. Two seemingly impossible tasks. But with determination and resilience, Sullivan reaches Helen in a miraculous breakthrough. Academy award-winning performances by actors Anne Bancroft as Anne Sullivan and 15 year old Patty Duke as Helen Keller. The key scene is the 9 minute wrestling match between Helen and Anne in the Keller dining room. Lesson to be learned: “Obedience without understanding is a blindness too.” Outstanding supporting performances by actors Victor Jory as Captain Keller and Inga Swenson as Kate. Superb soundtrack music composed by Laurence Rosenthal. Filmed in compelling black and white by cinematographer Ernesto Caparros. Have a box of Kleenex handy for the ending. Grade A+
