OK - but could have been so much better
I purchased this work based purely on an artice published November 5th 2019 in Time Out in which Mike Goldwater talks about his 5 favourite shots.
The article begins with the picture entitled Kiss at Holborn March 1978 where Mike explains `This was at Holborn, at the parting of the ways between Piccadilly and Central Lines. I was people-watching and this pair lingered there for a moment. They were so engrossed in each other, I don't think they clocked me at all.The time on this picture is documented at 4.08pm. Why were they kissing at 4.08pm on a weekday? It could be that they'd just come into town and he was going off to work. Or maybe it was an office romance, who knows? I was pleased to capture a moment of stillness and intimacy in a space often characterised by rush and anonymity. I was trying to reveal something about life on the Underground, how we all survive it.` Mike then goes on to describe the other 4 pictures featured in the article.
When the book arrived I was very excited, the external cover is quality and feels solid. I was filled with anticipation at what lay within, especially as the cover featured the the principle photo Mike had described in the article.
Alas, the only photos with any explanation were the 5 featured in the article. I was left with having to decide for myself why Mike had taken the remaining shots and subsequently included them in the book.
I enjoyed looking at the photos and will definitely return to them from time to time as they evoke personal memories of my many journeys on the Underground during the decade (mainly on the Central Line from Woodford to Oxford Circus).
In summary, I'm glad I made the purchase, but it did not meet my expectations and could have been so much better if there were some explanation, however brief, for each shot.
