Bacall, good or mediocre?
I ordered this DVD upon reading a dated issue of Sight and Sound magazine (British) which had an article about Bacall's acting abilities and depth of character in her later movies. In essence it said shy of two of the performances on this DVD, in her early career, she had little depth of character in the movies she stared in and was not up to the reputation she had as an actor. A well written article and concurrent upon her death actually, which is most likely why it was chosen for print. Given the nature of the article I thought "lets find a source for the movies and watch them". I did!
I enjoyed them all, were the depth of character in them varied, of course they were, different directors and different styles by different DPs.........some better, some not as great, but for the period, don't forget this was the cusp of going on local for Hollywood, they were very entertaining. So much for pontificating movie reviewers, I've never found them to be spot on anyway. In fact, I always figured they are either jealous want to be talents that could not hack it, or too lazy to have worked their way up the ladder of the many production jobs that lead to being a director. Just my opinion mind you but if you like film noire and early film noire to boot, these are a good way to tune the world of today out, even if just for a few short hours.
