Superman II - The Richard Donner Cut - DVD By Christopher Reeve - VERY GOOD
    13. Aug 2020
Donner's Superman 2 is great but not perfect
Richard Donner's cut of 'Superman 2' is very entertaining and a neat alternate look at how the movie would've turned out had he not been fired by the producers and replaced by Richard Lester, who finished up the film and his version was released to theaters in 1981. Donner's cut is engaging and explores Lois and Clark's relationship better. Lester's version has some clunky, silly moments to it, but that seems to be mostly gone from Donner's cut. I kinda prefer Donner's version, but it's not perfect. Two mistakes near the end mar what could've been a near perfect version. I love that Donner was able to restore footage, especially Brando's scenes, which made the movie better. However near the end after the villains are dispatched, Lex Luthor suddenly disappears, with no explanation~! A deleted scene which should've been included in Donner's cut explains things, so why wasn't it included in the film? Also, Superman spins around the earth at the end to reverse time just like the end of Superman the Movie, which felt unoriginal, a re-hash of the first film. Also, if time was reversed, and none of the events with Zod and others happened, then Clark was never beaten up by the bully in the diner, so there was no reason for him to return and beat the bully up at the end other than for revenge, which makes Superman seem petty. I wish Donner would've looked at those things and fixed them, but it's too late now.Still, this is a nice version and I recommend it despite its flaws~!

Fun Lil Abner cartoons but don't expect them to look like Al Capp's artwork
This is a fun collection of vintage cartoons and is funny and enjoyable to watch. My main quibble is that the animators didn't do a good job of duplicating Al Capp's wonderful artwork. They simply weren't able to capture the details of Capp's creations. It might have been better if Capp himself had been involved with doing the animation artwork so the characters he created looked true to form...like the way they appeared in the Lil Abner comics in the newspaper.Capp has a specific drawing style and the animating team didn't capture that.Aside from that, the cartoons are cute and entertaining.
Mail-Order Mysteries: Real Stuff from Old Comic Book Ads

Wonderful trip down memory lane for anyone who read comic books in the 1970s~!
If you're a baby boomer like me who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, chances are you read comic books back then, and this book is an awesome nostalgic look back at the ads for various products you could send for back then. I love those Bronze age comic books and the ads in them are a big highlight. Many are featured in this book, in full color and in all their mysterious glory. Author Kirk DeMarais takes us on an incredible trip to those days and it all quickly comes back when you see these old ads again: Sea Monkeys (which were actually just tiny brine shrimp), gag gifts like fake vomit, joy buzzers, monster posters, flying ghosts, self improvement and martial arts courses and booklets, x-ray glasses, and tons of neat stuff that you could acquire for a week's allowance or a few dollars more.I sent away for some of this stuff, including the cheap air car which was a total waste of money...but the ads made you think that you'd get something great by sending your money and waiting a few weeks. This book encapsulates a good deal of my childhood...I absolutely love it and highly recommend it~!
