Good side, it's robust and light, looks as if It should take the odd drop and bounce back, screens large enough and fairly bright, once you've worked out how to navigate the menus and changed a few settings, buttons and screen are easy to use, easy blue tooth connections to phone and headset.
However, the unit is advertised as being A2DP compliant, and hasn't got a mp3/radio player, unfortunately Garmin neglect to mention that the 390LM will not transmit a music signal from another A2DP compliant bluetooth device, only spoken, ie, phone signal, I connected my phone to my autocom, using voice prompts, and have a hardwire from the Garmin to the Autocom for directions.
As far as directions go, the biggest problem is, there is no main road only facility, so the unit will direct you down single track rutted roads as the quickest way, you end up ignoring the unit and going to the nearest A road, then let the unit recalculate, and hope it keeps on the main road. Has a multitude of navigation options and settings and it comes with lifetime maps, although that's the norm with most units now.
If your used to the build quality of the old 550 unit, then your in for a shock, the holder and fittings are pretty flimsy in comparison, but the holder works OK, not tried the car dock, but looks like Chinese ebay sort of quality.
Would I buy it again test? No, I'd consider the TomTom 400, about the same price now, or pay the extra and get the 590, with the extra features
