The Whole Package: Timeless, Superb Writing, and the Magnificent Clayburgh & Bates
Most women have been through this experience, but perhaps have not traversed the journey from being dumped/blindsided to emerging into independence as gracefully and entertainingly as Jill Clayburgh's character. I loved the film when it was first released and time has not diminished it in any way. The acting is superb, the characters remain as delightful as I remember them being (Allan Bates, oh my). It was a road map for many of us at that time, a first generation of women trying to navigate the single life in the confusion of it all: the humiliation of rejection (especially when the rival is a younger woman),Simmering fury and outbreaks of rage; so many options/free love, the novelty of, followed by growing comfort in, personal power and choice, etc. And the ending is sheer perfection - and a metaphor for an independent woman's achievement.
