HAVE PITY FOR THOSE WHO CAN"T GET 'ACQUIRE" ...
Played this discontinued game for YEARS with friends & family ... bit complicated for most children under 14 but ANYBODY who is a thinking person who enjoys a challenge can learn the entire concept of stock market strategies from it. I was actually in that industry myself for many years so am not exaggerating. Each step & stage of the game is governed by Game Rules ... strategies are learned to use at each phase of the game that can determine who will win the game.
Parts include the Bookcase Game Box portfolio which Avalon Hill Game Game Company were renown for producing ... Game Rules with Beginner Strategies ... set of marked solid classic tiles which coordinate with specific points upon the game board ... the upgraded formed plastic game board itself, designed to keep the tiles from being knocked askew by an unwieldy player ... racks for each of a limited # of players to use to hold 'their' tiles while hiding them from other players before they placing them the board ... 7 different & colorful tiles with a letter upon each to represent the name of a specific Hotel Chain ... set of charted cards Stock Values so players always know how much each hotel chain is worth at any given point during the game since size usually changes ... limited # of colorful stock cards representing stock/shares in each hotel chain ... paper currency ... & Currency Tray for the player appointed as The Banker.
Game begins with each player assigned an equal amount of currency, hotel tiles & a stock values card that is used to determine game play strategies. Any hotel chain can have a value of 'zero' or can be large enough to cause the game to end. Some hotel chains cost more than others to purchase but also pay higher Majority Holders Bonuses when mergers occur or at Game's End when the Winner is finally determined. Player strategies are varied & diverse ... have never seen 2 games with the same patterns of development. Junior players can win. Advanced players can win. Anybody can lose. An unusual combo of luck & strategy makes almost anything possible.
Turn play consists of placing a tile upon the board, deciding which 1 to 3 stocks to buy if any are available & then replacing the played tile with a new one drawn from unused tiles with hidden identities. Then the next player takes their turn. Play continues to rotate around the table. Several aspects of the game depend upon order of play & change player strategies. We always called the marked black hotel tiles "nobs" which somehow seemed to enhance the fun we always had. Game continues until all tiles are used or 1 chain achieves a maximum level of size.
The knobs belong to nobody once they've been placed on the board. Whenever 2 or more knobs connect horizontally or vertically a new 'Hotel Chain' is created & players buy stocks in the hotel chains created. Any tiles added to that new hotel chain increase its value. When a merger (collision) occurs the larger chain always stays on the board & the smaller is off again available to be used to start up a new chain. Players learn to track # of card each player buys or how they choose to exercise their stock options during mergers ... so can determine probable winners of majority stock bonuses whenever there is another merger. The value of stock in each chain is determined by the size levels of any given chains & at a fixed point are left on the board until Game End & any 'dead' nobs get replaced.
Strategies develop to take advantage of 'hunches' regarding hotel expansions, player prerogatives, majority holder's bonuses, the luck-of-the-draw for nobs placements & upon who creates a hotel & when & which one they choose to create. Game Winner is often a surprise to all since it's determined by both the amount of cash-on-hand & by the value of a player's current stocks.
The game is durable ... never saw anything go wrong with a single piece of it ... likely due to the high-brow packaging provided with it. People treat it with respect & it's loved by all who learn the concepts it involves. I made the mistake of giving my vintage copy away ... but missed it so much that finally for a treasure-hunt ... found it on Ebay & was luck enough to obtain a New & Unopened version for myself. I'll never give it away again.
I bought it as a Christmas Surprise for the Family this year so have not seen it nor played it for nearly 2 decades now. How much I value it is evident in the details I've recalled from memory alone. What I cannot do is demonstrate how much people learn from it ... nor how much fun they have while doing so.
I recommend this Bookcase Board Game as the single best product ever manufactured by Avalon HIlls ... & I had most of their collection at one point in my life. It does require avid board game enthusiasts because of the intricacies of applied strategy & logistical development.
I look forward to revisiting my old friendship with this game. I am so glad that I re-acquired "Acquire" in my life!
