The perrenial choice for a compact versatile camp stove
This is the second Trangia I have owned. The first was bought some 30 years ago and did good service while I was a student for camping holidays.
Lured back to camping by a young family (the kids love it) and the first thing is the design is exactly the same as 30 years ago! This time round I added the kettle (very handy for heating water on the camp fire while you cook) and a gas burner and went for the slightly larger size 25 series. I particularly like the versatility of choice between meths, gaz and multifuel; you can buy alternatives and just add them to your existing set. I went Gaz this time because of the convenience and ease of use although it is much more expensive to run. The gear enthusiast in me would like to play with the multifuel but it is expensive (£150 for a series 2) and that would by an awful lot of gaz bottles.
My experience with the meths burner was that
I) I always ended up tainting the food with the taste of meths and
2) it was a pain to have to get the right amount of meths in the burner - you cannot top up while the burner is hot,
3) using the simmering ring to adjust the temperature always had a risk of burning your hand particularly if it is going full pelt.
The Trangia is amazingly compact and efficient if you read and understand how to use it correctly. All the component fit into the stand with the frying pan acting as the lid - two pans and a kettle so you don't really need anything else in your cook set. I have a small car and space is at a premium. It brings a pan of food to the boil quickly because the lid/wind guard design heats the whole of the pan, not just the bottom. I was tempted by a non stick frying pan but I got a deal on this one with a battered box and half price was just too good to miss. That said I will probably add a more substantial frying pan as the one included is thin and I found it difficult to use.
The size 25 is easliy big enough for two kids and two adults.
