Real Comedy.
Laughs, drama, advice to live with and possibly Wilder’s best comedic co-starring role with Richard Pryor. The seduction scene in the sleeping car between the inebriated Wilder and Jill Clayburgh was as memorable for that scene’s unfortunate climax as it was for the sexual imagery. The beautiful scenery along the LA to Chicago journey is a welcome diversion to the unfortunate circumstances Wilder finds himself in but this movie’s triumph is the meeting of Wilder with Pryor and the ensuing escapades. This synergy is integral to the movie and my favourite scene is the one in the rest room between the two that provides salient advice by Pryor to Wilder to get out of a sticky situation. The advice is universal and should have left very little wriggle room for Wilder’s stingy response but viewers will appreciate Pryor’s genius without me giving any hint of the circumstances they found themselves in. The underrated Clayburgh puts in a polished performance as do the other co-stars but there is no doubt what binds this successful recipe for future collaborations. I rate it a 4.5 out of 5.
