A Greater Victory than Tours
Good general introduction to Byzantine military history to ca. 730 AD. Hyperabundance of names of Muslim leaders; good technical references to the Roman heritage of Byzantine military techniques. I would like to have seen a lot more illustrations of Byzantine warriors--doubtless the supply of such is limited. A good older and probably out of print historical fiction version is "The Beauty of the Purple." Best coverage would be in standard Byzantological works--Vasiliev, Gibbon, etc., and orginal works such as Procopius, the works attributed to the Emperor Maurice, etc. A very worthwhile read for an enthusiastic amateur but probably of limited value to a genuine scholar of military history.

The Ride of the Bismarck
Great junior high level account of the mighty Bismarck and her lone expedition, her triumph over the vaunted Hood, and her doom at the hands of most of the British battle fleet. Told from the perspectives of three ratings, and the highest ranking officer surviving, it is good reading; well-balanced, although I would like to have had more on Kapitan Lindemann, with whose niece I had the pleasue of sharing a morning neawrly 20 years ago in Philadelphia. Anyway, readily worth the price; I plan to give it as a gift to a student.

Awesome read and appealing portrait of a much-maligned imperial family.
A totally moving and revealing portrait of HIM Viktoria's father the Kaiser by an only daughter and favorite child. Her accounts of both her mother 's passing and funeral return to the Fatherland, and of course of the cortege in Doorn for her father are indeed compelling and moved me to tears. For me this book is a great read, added to my collection of HIM's memoirs, those of his son the Crown Prince, those of his grandson Louis, and biographies of HIM's brother Grand Admiral Prince Heinrich, etc. What a different picture from the vile propaganda of the Allies during and after the war. I thoroughly recommend this volume, so appropriate around Armistice Day. I'm so grateful it was available at such a low price--wonderful!!!
