You can't beat Rodinal for both quality and economy.

Magnum Contact Sheets
Fantastic book shows the shots around the photos that became icons of 20th century photography. Totally inspiring and challenging. Anyone even vaguely interested in photography should have this book.

Superb classic film
Excellent all purpose film, good for push processing, nice grain, good contrast. Try some different developers to find your favourite - e.g. Rodinol, ID11/D76
