Love books about old people - especially feisty old people! She is not out-right evil but I am glad I am not related to her.
The main character in this book has had a long and interesting life. She has managed to hurt, insult and worse almost everyone she's ever met. This is one of those books where you read something that a character has done and say to yourself "OMG - I can't believe she did that". She never considers anyone else's feelings. Even the little things she does that she thinks are useful inflict damage - like discarding treasured belongings without asking anyone if they want them. Loved this book and passed it on to several friends who also really enjoyed it. I found this book by searching for novels that take place in Maine. So glad I found this. It really makes you wonder about how other people's minds work.

Page turner. I will recommend this to friends. I know a happy ending is coming - just not sure how the author will get there.
I decided to read this book because the author was a friend of Charles Dickens. I was drawn to the story and characters right away. If you like old mansions from the 1800's, that's an added bonus. It's a long book but that is all the better since it is so enjoyable to read.
