History set straight
Though now remembered as a Marine operation, the battle for Guadalcanal was determined by seven Naval engagements between the USN and the IJN. Three of every four Americans killed during the battle of GC ( ~5,000 sailors, 1,500 marines) were sailors. Indeed, in two separate battles, 2600 American sailors were killed (1,300 per battle) . During one of the night battles, the USN engaged with a group of destroyers and cruisers a larger Japanese task force that included two battleships. The sailors knew ahead of time what they would face, but had to engage the IJN, to save Henderson airfield.
The last two chapters are particularly moving. One details 80+ year old survivor visiting GC years later. The other details the investigation, and the human toll, of the 1st battle (Savo Island), the single greatest defeat suffered by the USN, where the USN lost five cruisers without sinking a single IJN ship.

Fun read
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich I enjoyed this book. Unlike books by other fighter pilots, this one contained few descriptions of combat flying. Blesse instead focused on writing about his near his brushes with death that were due to poorly maintained equipment. I was surprised to find no mention of Check Yeager or John Boyd. Bleese certainly must have have crossed paths with both or, in the case of Boyd, known about his book on combat maneuvering. My sense is that Blesse's ego kept him from acknowledging the superior accomplishments of Yeager and Boyd. Bleese did however give a back hand compliment to Robin Olds, as well as a full compliment to Ralph Parr ("He was a superior pilot"). All in all, a fine and honest look back at the life of a true warrior and hero.

Excellent speakers
I'm delighted with the speakers-- will you can't blister paint off walls with them, they're perfect for playing music from my Mac while I'm seated in front of the 'puter.
