The Short Life of Booker Little
The astonishing trumpet sound of Booker Little is displayed in this collection. Considering he died at the young age of 23, he wasted no time in establishing himself as a very individual soloist in the broad field of post-bop trumpeters, following the great Clifford Brown and in the same company as Carmell Jones, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard and a number of others who emerged at the end of the 1950's. Little, like the rest was a fast and fluent player of great brilliance.
The main interest here come from the first five tracks which include tenor saxophonist, Booker Ervin- with impressive playing by both Bookers.
Recording quality is reasonable and not a bar to enjoyment of the music -although not up to the very highest standards of 1959/60 when the best engineers were producing discs barely distinguishable in quality from today's high fidelity.
Full personnel details are included, but, alas, we are not given information about the location of the recording dates.
For any trumpet player,or for any fan of high quality post bop small group jazz, all recordings by Booker Little are essential listening. This one is no exception, including as it does original work by Booker Ervin ('Scoochie') and Booker Little ('The Confined Few') both clever and challenging compositions. Listen out also for a spirited version of Mercer Ellington's 'Things Ain't What They Used To Be' from a separate group including Frank Strozier and George Coleman, with Phineas Newborn.
