How do I review a title the artist gave a CD? It is what it is.
This is an excellent sounding 24 kt gold reissue of an already surprisingly good sounding earlier digital pressing. I gave it only 3 stars because the 4 star rating means it "was better than expected" & I was expecting a CD that sounded pretty good, and it does sound pretty good. Does its audio quality blow the earlier digital pressing of "Solitude Standing" out of the water? No, not by a long shot, the earlier digital pressing is no slouch--it sounds fantastic. But yes--I do recommend it (as I would buy it again), and the value seems consistent (or better) with other 24 kt gold reissues I have bought and I feel the quality is excellent.

What can one say about a title that artist(s) choose? This one is accurate.
I am a fan of Steve Earle, so for that reason I find his interaction with Shawn Colvin interesting. However, I did not find this CD to be anywhere near being a sonic master piece. It was not horrible to the ear, but it did not flow out of my speakers and fill my listening room with glorious sound stage, or sparse mesmerizing detail. In my room on my system, the bass was bombastic and up front, and the vocals were too far in back of the guitars for my taste.
I used to keep up with Steve Earle rather obsessively, but he is so prolific that after Transcendental Blues I cannot remember what the following CDs of his I bought sounded like, as I barely had time to listen to them (with everything else I had).
So although I find Colvin and Earle to be interesting, it would not be on my Must have By Steve Earle list (& there are several that are).

The title, "different Drum", is appropriate.
This was an interesting find for me; first because it is a Japanese remaster and secondly because the track selection comes from an earlier Linda Ronstadt period that I am not overly familiar with. As far as the sonic quality goes, however, it is nothing to jump up & down about & weep tears of joy over. Linda's voice has a bit of an edgy grain to it and the bass sounds wooden and like it is coming out of a can. Some of the Japanese remasters I have heard are stunning, but this one didn't. This could be due to the original masters; I have a couple of highly touted remasters of Linda Ronstadt's Greatest Hits Volume 1 (which I believe is roughly from this same time period) and they are not that great sounding either. (And no, I am not a hater, I do own a few Linda Ronstadt remasters that sound fantastic.)
