Boston Symphony Archives - A Winner
It has been 40 years since I've watched Leinsdorf perform and this was good entertainment. He was the first BSO conductor from the Germanic tradition since Muck's controversial exit in 1918. Leinsdorf was not without controversy either and his leaving the BSO more than 50 years later was not on good terms. Nevertheless, he was a first rate musician, a technical precisionist, often a refreshing innovator, and managed to win numerous grammy awards during his tenure with the BSO.
The performances captured on this DVD are typical for the time. It's not a modern "Concert Movie" production. They're in B&W, were originally for regular TV broadcasts, video clarity is better than just acceptable, the camera work is pretty good, and the audio kept me entertained. Nothing is meant to distract from the music. For those who are familiar with the times, Leinsdorf is more animated than I at first remembered, Joseph Silverstein, whom Leinsdorf referred to as his "fine fiddler," is at times prominent. There is also a non-mustachioed bassoonist Sherman Walt, a young flutist Doriot Anthony Dwyer, and oboist Ralph Gomberg who are often caught on camera.
The acoustics at Boston's Symphony Hall are quite good and old memories of a live performance of Beethoven's 9th easily helped color my appreciation while I watched this historic performance. Not unnoticed was a member of the chorus who at times, somewhat humorously, became a little too preoccupied with the soloists.
All in all an excellent production by the Boston Symphony Orchestra Historic Telecasts Archives. I hope there will be additional Leinsdorf releases. If you like Leinsdorf, this is a winner. If you're a fan of the BSO, you will appreciate this. If you like historic performances from the "Golden Age of Conducting," you don't want to miss this.
