The Red Tent

Gripping Reflection on Past Choices and the Disastrous Consequences
This week’s movie was “The Red Tent,” an epic Soviet-Italian co-production from 1969. Peter Finch stars as General Umberto Nobile, who commanded an ill-fated airship expedition to the North Pole In 1928. The film is told from the perspective of the explorer as an old man, still tortured by guilt over the horrors he experienced and the decisions he made. One sleepless night he calls back the ghosts of those affected by the disaster to serve as his jury in a private trial. Among the jurors is Roald Amundsen, (Sean Connery,) the first man to reach the South Pole. Amundsen died in a plane crash while attempting to rescue Nobile and his men. During the trial the story of the airship crash is told in flashback, as well as the tale of the lengthy struggles of the survivors in the Arctic wastes. This is a magnificent and emotionally involving movie directed with relentless tension by Mikhail Kalatozov making his final film. The marvelous soundtrack was composed by the great Ennio Morricone. Only the raspy-voiced actress Claudia Cardinale seems out of place in a completely fictional role as a nurse awaiting the rescue of her lover from the ice. (In English and Russian with subtitles.)

Maybe it isn't a good movie, but it is certainly an interesting one.
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich "Red Planet Mars" is a fairly obscure science fiction film from 1952. It tells the story of a scientist, (Peter Graves,) who is using a hydrogen-cooled radio valve, (developed by a Nazi scientist,) in an effort to communicate with Mars. Unknown to Graves, the Nazi scientist is still alive and hiding in the Andes mountains, where he is also attempting to contact the red planet, (with funding from Soviet agents.) When the Nazi discovers the American's efforts, he begins sending responses to Grave's messages. These signals, apparently from Mars, cause panic in the American public and bring the economy to a standstill. But Graves also begins to receive messages of a religious nature, and these are not coming from the Nazi scientist. A religious rebirth sweeps over the nation of Russia, and the Soviet Union is overthrown. Is God communicating with Earth from the planet Mars?
Maybe it isn't a good movie, but it certainly is an interesting one. The film has similarities to the 1950 movie "The Next Voice You Hear...," which is also about radio messages from God. As a Christian I certainly appreciate the intentions of the filmmakers, but judging the film on its artistic merits I have to admit it isn't a particularly good film. The characters are neither believable nor particularly well-developed, and the film gets overly sentimental and preachy at the climax. That having been said, the middle portion of the film portraying the social effects of the Martian broadcasts is fascinating to watch. The film also has an early portrayal of a flat-screen wall-mounted television that wouldn't be out of place in the present year.
This is a fascinating document of the time, portraying both the Cold War concerns of the nineteen-fifties, and the religious reawakening that was also taking place during those years.

THE STARLOST Complete Series
2 von 2 finden das hilfreich This DVD set contains all sixteen episodes of this obscure series from 1973, as well as the presentation film offered to local stations interested in purchasing the series for syndication. The program itself has its faults, (such as limited production values and weak special effects.) I was surprised to find that the series is not nearly as bad as its reputation. The guest cast contains some wonderful and interesting actors, such as Sterling Hayden and John Colicos. The stories have their faults, but there is some imagination on display. The show should be compared with the original "Land of the Lost" or the original "Tomorrow People." In that category the series has something to offer. As for the DVD itself, the transfers and sound quality are pretty good for a program originally recorded on videotape. This show is worth a second look.
