The Pirate review
The Pirate. 1947. Stars Judy Garland and Gene Kelly in this magical musical. It tells the story of Manuela a young girl who is betrothed to marry the town mayor (Walter Slezak) but does not like him. Manuela has a secret desire about Macocoa the dashing pirate of the carribean. Enter Gene Kelly as a traveling actor and persuades under hypnosis he is indead the famous Macocoa. Manuela is smitten.Fun and games ensue when she discovers that Gene Kelly is not who she thinks he is. Famouns songs include "You can do no wrong" "Mack the black" and a hilarious finale of Judy and Gene singing "Be a clown" Not a big hit at the time but has now become a "cult" classic. Directed by Judy's then husband Vincent Minnelli. Judy suffered from Post natal depression during filming after giving birth to daughter Liza Minnelli, but this never showed on screen
