AMD Opteron 3.1Ghz 8-Core 0S4386WLU8KHK

Decent server processor

When it comes to value, the AMD Opteron provides a good value. However, Intel still reigns supreme when it comes to performance. Even the benchmarks on AMD's site compare this CPU to a 6 Core Xeon processor at a lower clock speed where the Xeon outperformed this CPU. I ended up going with AMD Opteron since it was priced a lot lower than a Xeon. I wanted a large number of cores so that I could allocate cores to virtual machines. I am not doing anything too CPU intensive so I didn't need something that was very performant. I have two of these running in a server which is a file server, as well as a VM host, which runs a web server, database server, VPN server, AD server, PBX server, TFS server, build server, and a few others. So far, the server has been running just fine using a pair of these Opteron 4386 CPUs.

Cool and quiet

I was replacing an old ceiling fan in a room that even at high speed, you could barely feel a breeze. With this fan, there's a strong breeze that helps you feel cool. This also does a great job of circulating the air so now the whole room is cooled by the AC instead of just part of it. Installation was simple and straightforward. Two CFL bulbs are included with this as well. The DC motor is very quiet and doesn't produce a humming sound like AC motors. So far, I have been very pleased with this fan.
