Soothing music of consistent quality from first to last selection. My favorite collection from a legendary conductor/arranger.
As a long-time migraine patient, I've come to appreciate the way soft music, at a low volume, helps me relax and even gradually distracts me from the pain. This Andrew Kostelanetz CD is one of best for that. It's also ideal for those times I want soothing background music for reading, writing or even enjoying a good meal. I played rock and country for a living in the '60s, but food and reading go down better with Kostelanetz or Gleason/Hackett than with the Stones or Waylon.

A loving tribute to the original.
Peter Gunn purists will probably hate my rating. "This isn't the original music," they'll say. Actually it IS the original music, but not the soundtrack. In a way, it's a tribute album, played by jazz musicians who obviously love Mancini's brilliant compositions. I appreciate the fact that they don't slavishly try to duplicate the original sound, but choose to infuse their own interpretations as an expression of their admiration. Tribute albums are sometimes very bad [I can think of one Buddy Holly tribute like that] or very good [Rumon Gamba's CD "The Film Music of Ron Goodwin," for example]. "The Jazz Sound from Peter Gunn" is an excellent collection played by outstanding, well-respected musicians who obviously wanted to honor the source material; in my opinion, they succeeded splendidly.
