Checking the water without getting your feet wet
Buying a guitar can be a life altering event! Even now, with over two dozen guitar purchases under my belt, I still get a "Christmas morning" like excitement each time I pick up and hold the neck of a potential "New" acquisition, I get overwhelmed with anticipation! Some of these moments, 1978 when I got my first Stratocaster, or 1987 when I bought my 1954 Gibson SJ200, were, as I noted above, life altering, but in the age of the Internet the guitar buying experience has forever changed.(Some day I will find out what selling a guitar feels like, someday!) Buying a guitar based on photos and descriptions is a whole different ballgame! No photos or descriptions can accurately describe feel and tone of a truly well built instrument. You wouldn't want to marry your Pen-Pal before meeting in person. Well that is where the Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars becomes invaluable. No book can tell you if your purchase is going to be an emotional, life altering event but what the Blue Book can do is help prevent you from getting ripped off! And when I say "Help" that is all it can do, it's my experience that most people are relatively honest but I find emotional attachment rather than greed results in owners overvaluing by 10-25% it's up to you to haggle them down. If the seller doesn't accept returns the instrument has probably had major surgery and/or replacement parts. And, of course, if it sounds too good to be true it most likely is not!
