A MUST HAVE for Songwriters!
Any fan of The Beatles will love the anthology collection for all the obvious reasons. What's not to like about alternate takes of your favorite songs? But for songwriters, these songs clue us in to the process. We hear the initial vocal and guitar demo of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" without all the lush production, lead solos, etc. And what we're left with is an equally-great song! I always heard a particular sadness in that song and now that I've heard the demo, that sadness is all the more poignant. Many years ago I remember hearing a "rumor" that Paul McCartney told Badfinger to play "Come and Get it" "...exactly like this and I guarantee that it will be a hit." Now that I can hear the orginal McCartney demo of that hit song, it clearly wasn't a rumor afterall! Apart from the harmonies which are not in the demo, the demo is very similar to the Badfinger version. I am also particularly fond of the alternate "Blackbird" version on the CD. McCartney elaborates the vocals in places which were ultimately never used. In fact, they obviously went for the "keep it simple" philosophy with this song and I think they made the right choice. ENJOY!

Best obscure alt pop album of the 80s?
This is one of my favorite “alternative pop” albums of the 80s that sadly remains an obscurity today and continues to resonate with a beautiful time capsule effect. I bought it on cassette in the bargain bin in the late 80s just because it looked cool. I ended up hooked on these songs, bought the vinyl 10 yrs later, and recently bought the CD. Alex Chilton and Marshall Crenshaw sing backing vocals! Some guitars and production by Mitch Easter, mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig. “From the Word Go” still gives me head tingles. Fans of the late Tommy Keene should especially check this out.
