Okinawan 100 Mon
This is a very interesting and scarce 100 Mon from the Southern island of Okinawa (Ryukyu). One rarely encounter these coins and this one is of above average condition. It was a good buy at a very reasonable price for one of these.

Royal Ryukyu's last cast coins.
These large coins, the last to be minted from an independent Okinawan kingdom before its complete subjugation by Japan, clearly show the influence of China. Indeed the strategic importance of the island as a major crossroad in would be noted throughout its history both economically and strategically. This beautifully preserved coin is a reminder of Ryukyu's place in history.

Ancient Kevlar: Creating the Ancient Greek Linothorax
Reconstructing Ancient Linen Body Armor is a necessity for anyone interested in Classical warfare. The Greek Linothorax was an enigma for many years for Classical historians. Mentioned in a number of texts, among them the "Iliad" of Homer, Herodotos and other texts. The references indicated a widespread and popular armor, but no examples have survived due to its very nature of being composed almost entirely of linen cloth. How could cloth armor be effective? Was it a stop-gap protection used as a last resort by those who could not afford something better? The authors, in conjuntion with students and craftspersons undertook a grand scale project to answer the many questions they had by recreating the linothorax, and proved that, contrary to expectations, the armor was far superior to even metal armor of the age, able to withstand penetration by even arrows shot at it from close range.
