A classic and rightly so
A great story. By and large followed closely by the classic film but with some differences. One of the best of wartime novels and thoroughly recommended. A classic of endurance and fellowship in adversity. Proper stiff upper lip stuff!

Wartime fiction at its best
Not at all what I was expecting but a rather brilliant surprise. By turns witty and grim, a satire of war and leadership. A thoroughly good read and highly recommended.

Wartime non-fiction as compelling as a thriller
Historical non-fiction at its best. Detailed, knowledgeable and as compelling as fiction. Written by a man who was there during those momentous events. One to read again. Masterly.
