This is in German and the diphthongs are occasionally awkward, but otherwise unalloyed pleasure. Superb conducting (lively but not 'rushed') and a wonderful cast of singers.

Many great recorded cycles out there, but this one belongs in the top tier. Korstick is a bit of a Beethoven 'nerd', but he has both power and wit. Good orchestral accompaniement and well recorded.

Old recording suitable for those accustomed to listening to historic live recordings. But, what a cast! Melchior, Traubel, Varnay, Janssen. Nothing to match this in the last 40 years or more.
