One of The Last DVD Recorders with Front Panel Controls
Sony's RDR-GX7 cost $699.95 at Crutchfield, a major mail order vendor, when introduced in 2004. It is solidly built. It is not, however, on of the newer generation, all-format recorders that Sony and other major manufacturers are selling for around $200.00. I bought this recorder without a remote -- but one is not needed: all essential programming functions can be handled on the front of the unit. I do own a 2005 vintage Sony RDR-GX315 recorder -- you need the remot incidentally to program it -- and its remote works fine with the RDR-GX7. So, there's no need (if you insist on using one) to pay the $85 Sony parts charges for a replacement remote for the GX7. Here's another, final, plus: the clincher: The 2005 Sony 315 shuts down while recording HBO and other new movies - tells you the material is copyrighted. The RDR-GX7 and other earlier Sony's don't shut down this way. I found this out in a CNET review of the 315 -- many angry people brought their 2005 vintage 315s back to dealers because of this deliberate crippling of the 315's record function by Sony. One CNET reviewer even said he bought a 2004 model Sony to replace it -- and it works fine recording cable and satellite movies. (He wrote, incidentally, that he bought his "new," used, 2004-vintage Sony DVD recorder on eBay!)

Forbidden Hollywood Collection - Vol. 3 (DVD, 2009, 4-Disc Set)
    25. Okt 2015
Not just of historical interest - but also first rate entertainment.
Every one of the films in this valuable boxed set - one of several in the "Forbidden Hollywood" collection - is entertaining - and not just to cineastes and university film students. The digital re-imaging of every one of them is a good as can be imagined - all of them look as bright and new as they might have looked to an audience viewing them as new productions 80 or so years ago. It's possible that these movies are in even better shape than that - since the films seen in our country's movie houses far and wide were often copies several times removed from the original masters of the films on view - while the films I've viewed in this set look like they might be the initially produced versions - an amazing technical accomplishment. These films belong in the collection of any serious pre-Hollywood Code movie buff - and, for that matter, anyone who wants to explore how Americans of all classes saw their contemporary lives and their recent past during the Depression Era ("recent past" - "Frisco Jenny," for example). My favorite is "Wild Boys of the Road" - a favorite also of my late dad, who knew personally - even as the boys in this rather downbeat film discovered to their dismay - how tough it was to be young - and to survive - during the Great Depression. Highly recommended.

Has Original "Unexpugated" "Here Comes Santa Claus"
This compilation, along with Volume 1, is a must-have for anyone who is a baby-boomer and listened to pop music, and/or who would like to introduce his/her child/children to popular Chirstmas music from the great postwar era of popular music, especially the time right before the British Invasion and before "sex-drugs-and-rock-and-roll" pop music culture started to hit hard in the mid-60s. (Nothing wrong with most of that music either - they're just different eras and genres.) I listened to WCBS-FM for years until Dan Ingram quit, and then I stopped entirely when it was converted to a new format, called "Jack" or something like that. But this cd - indeed all the Coolectibles cds themed to WCBS FM's Oldies format - partakes of some of the most brilliant and thoughtful radio programming done in the United States since the end of World War II. So it is not just the content of this cd that makes it great and informative listening, but the phrasing of that content. I mean that this Christmas cd and the earlier Volume 1 Collectibles-WCBS-FM cd isn't just "Oldies Elevator Music," but thought has been put into the ordering of the content, as with a well-thought-out radio program. To understand what I speak of, tune in XM Radio's or Sirius Radio's decade-themed pop music channels (I'm not speaking of channels like Deep Tracks or The Boneyard) -and you will get exactly what you pay for: " muzaky" music "programmed" by ... a computer software program. Final, fascinating fact about this cd: the version of "Here Comes Santa Claus" by Gene Autry is the original one, done for Columbia records. When Gene Autry left that label and set up his own, he re-recorded his many of his songs, and the Gene Autry cd titled "Here Comes Santa Claus," which is a re-recorded disc, contains a version of this song which is expurgated. For some reason, the lyric "we're all God's children" has been elimiinated, and an altered, non-theistic line substituted.
