    Brilliant collection of stories
A wonderful collection of short stories from one of the great twentieth century Irish writers. Superb in every possible way.

    Classic 1970s British novel
"An unmarked stone stands on a remote islet in the Baltic, among the countless skerries where, as the Swedes say, 'no man should go'. A geological freak or an ancient monument. "Sebastian Grimes, on holiday from a psychiatric clinic, goes where no man should have, and the puzzle draws the disparate halves of his family together. There is Xantippe, his unpredictable archaeologist mother; Per, her second husband; Per's sister, Gerd, a sculptor who owns the islet; and Per's intriguing son, Gunnar. At the centre stands the mysterious stone-a pivot on which their relationships turn in the lazy Swedish summer. "Stuart Lauder's comic sense and flair for the unexpected dominate the tale of Sebastian's alarmed progress in quest of the pillar's secret. Set against a barren, beautiful landscape, peopled with unusual characters and marked with the author's special brand of ironic wit, 'The Standing Stone' is a continuing pleasure to read. Further the author's longstanding fascination with pre-history, combined with his enjoyment of outdoor life-of Sweden in this case-informs this latest novel. As in his previous novels, his basic theme concerns the marvellous ability of man-whether a Cro-magnon cave painter or a neurotic youth adrift in the Swedish skerries-to adapt and survive, and to employ his wit and intelligence to make sense out of obscurity." From the flyleaf of the 1977 hardback edition from Victor Gollancz Ltd. But it means that I am not reading them in t

Superficial and a waste of money
A book of poorly researched travel articles about various saints and their cults. Superficially and bad value for money. I think saints cults are ridiculous, I have no problems with the authors doubts - but they are so superficial as to a waste of time. A truly dreadful book.
