Belly -Star
Belly's debut album as something of a mixed bag , sure there is the usual mix of sombre balladry and indie power pop but there is somewhat of a disconnect throughout a vast part of the album .
Lead off single "Gepetto" is somewhat average when compared to other material on the album and in fairness has dated badly . For me Tanya Donnelly's songwriting and delivery is far better on second album KING ( also check out my review here ) "Dusted" is an incredibly gritty tune and in a lot of respect my tip for stand out track on the album .
"Someone to die for " sounds strained and tormented , which i am sure is the intention , but this does not stack up 15 years on where is to a degree sounds nauseating.
This is far from the most upbeat collection of tunes with the exception of "Feed the Tree" ...also a single , but in fairness having dug this out after many years it sounds tired and dated.
Given a choice I would seek out KING as this is a far better and more rounded effort ..

Perry Farrell - Song Yet To Be Sung (CD 2001)
Perry Farrell is long established as the Godfather of alternative music fronting bands such as Janes Addiction and Porno For Pyros as well as founding the successful Lollapalooza tour .
If Janes Addicition is Perry Farrell’s legacy to the Music world and the indifference of Porno For Pyros is Farrell at his most over indulgent and nihilistic then “Song Yet to be sung “ is his most experimental .
On first listen it is quickly apparent that none of these songs would sound out of place as a guest slot on a Chemical Brothers or Leftfield album , and it is debatable as to whether or not on the slower more ambient numbers ,that Massive Attack or Tricky may have crafted a better sound some years earlier .
In my opinion , Farrell’s voice has never sounded more accomplished and the general flavour of the album , which is somewhere between eastern infused spiritual electronica and an education in crashing break beats is well suited to this . And this could be as much a part of the albums greatness as it could be its failure.
Fans of Jane’s Addiction could feel rightly isolated by this release , sure there is the odd power chord thrown in here and there ,but for the best part the music is driven in a electro way meaning that it is not likely to be as well fecieved by the alternative faithful .
It is a gutsy release , Opener “Happy Birthday Jubilee” more than sets the tone with more than a similarity to more commercial drum and bass offerings , “Song yet to be sung “ which I feel is a song lacking in ideas and the albums title track meanders through its play time . From here on in it is a case of a familiar formula and consistent re-invention with nothing really grabbing you en route . There is nothing particularly offensive to the ears , and it would be naïve to suggest that Farrell has anything is his box of tricks to top his more acclaimed work such as “ Jane Says” and at under 50 minutes it does not drag out and become more overly indulgent.
I think in summary this album tries to bridge a gap that is best left as space. Fans of Electronica will find better releases in the vaults of The Chemical Brothers, Leftfield , Unkle , Spiritualised, Hybrid to name but a few. Fans of Alternative Music are likely to distance themselves in view of this and what is left is a piece of work , which no doubt has satisfied the artists need to re-invent and re-discover yet will leave listeners completely undecided.
At best this is average , and while I cannot say that I am the number one Jane’s addiction or Porno For Pyros fan on the planet , their material is much better, more consistent and likely to achieve far greater longevity.

Belly - King (CD 1995 )
Having bought the album originally back when I was a hell of a lot younger , I am pleased to say having put this back into my playlist finally, that in the 12 years since release that Belly’s second Album - King , still sounds surprisingly fresh and in some respects as a band there have not been many successors.
Granted , this is alternative rock for the bubblegum generation , but in terms of longevity this is still a great , modern sounding album that has stood the test of time .
It is a fact many bands of the era , think Throwing Muses , Verruca salt , Kristin Hersh , The Breeders and The Pixies have to a degree amassed more of a cult following and without doubt a bigger back catalogue than Belly , but there is no doubt that there is no substitute for Tanya Donnelly & co .
Kicking off with “puberty “ a mid tempo foot stomper and swiftly followed by single “Seal my fate” with its alt-pop sweetness -King is 45 mins well spent .
Not every song would be a single, the same would be said of any album , but with King you get everything from slow tempo ballad to edge of the mosh-pit crowd pleaser all suitably complimented by Tanya Donnely’s schoolgirl angst style vocal .
For me , a stand out track is “Super -connected “ which is instantly accessible and mixes haunting verses with sing along choruses. As an easy second , I would take single “now They’ll sleep “ or possibly “The Bees” which is also excellent .
King isn’t just an above average alternative album , it is quite brilliant and fans of the genre could do worse than pick this up and have a listen . It will quickly be apparent that not only has the alternative genre not moved on much , but in the 12 years since release, they have not managed to better this either .
Thoroughly recommended. …
