The World Almanac of the Vietnam War [1932-1988], Edited by John S. Bowman.
As an American Air Borne Infantry (Air Cavalry) cadet with a 4 Year Army ROTC Scholarship, I was fortunate to "sit out" a bloody war which I, like most Americans did not understand. I am only now understanding the conflict as a small part of a 400 year conflict between tiny Vietnam & it's neighbor a giant oppressor, China. The tradition of fighting for freedom in Vietnam has endured for these four Centuries, with millions of Vietnamese patriots sacrificing their precious lives to be free against overlords from China, Myanmar, Japan, France, & the USA. This book explains the last chapter in the bloodshed for Vietnamese Liberty, with the result falling back to the parity of Chinese rule as the norm for more than these 400 years of fighting for independence. The Almanac attempts a day to day report on the War from 1932 until 1988, & does a relatively good job, providing paragraph length or less blurbs of events. Finally, as a US fighting man, I understand how unfortunate the Vietnamese are to have the world's bullies constantly preening her resources, killing her people, and dominating her future. This Almanac is essential for any breast beating "Vietnam Veteran."-Leonard Thomas
