Nikon 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 AF-S VR IF ED G Lens

A real 70-300mm

After having a Tamron 70-300mm for the last year or so, I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to the Nikkor glass (on a D5100). Best move I've made with the camera so far, and well worth the extra £400 new value. First thing you notice if you have a comparative 'budget' lens is the massive weight difference. Now obviously, that's not exactly a plus factor in terms of ergonomic use, but my goodness, it makes you realise how much better quality the Nikkor glass is. Overall, I've noted a marked improvement throughout the zoom range, and it performs especially well around the 180-250mm mark, and in the middle of the aperture range, as you'd exepect from most zoom lenses. Tack sharp throughout though, even with my shaky hands :-) A highly recommended upgrade to anyone on the fence.

Great pens at a fantastic price.

The purple one isn't great to be honest, not very bright, nor does it have a great range. The red one is pretty much on a par with any red one I've used before. The Green one is exceptional. Looks awesome on a foggy night *disclaimer, not pointing at aeroplanes.
