A must read for a true understanding of global warming
0 von 1 finden das hilfreich This is a relatively short, but excellent book about global warming. The author plainly concedes that global warming is real and must be dealt with, but he challenges the conventional wisdom that investing in reducing CO2 is the necessarily the best way to combat its effects. This is NOT armchair science or partisan rhetoric; the author is an accomplished professor and author, and bases his arguments on scientific consensus and not unfounded conjecture.
His position is, essentially, that global warming will afford humanity many tangible benefits - as well as drawbacks. He demonstrates a cost-benefit analysis for combating each negative effect of global warming. For instance, he states that it will be much cheaper to combat the spread of malaria DIRECTLY by buying and using mosquito nets in Africa and other developing countries - as opposed to the notion that the best way to prevent the spread of malaria is through reducing CO2. He points out that compliance with the Kyoto protocol is not only inordinately expensive, but will help reduce warming, the strength of hurricanes, sea level rise, etc., by only a miniscule amount. He argues that we should instead deal with the individual problems more directly, and thus more cost effectively (eg. via use of sea walls, limiting coastal development). There is a lot of data to support his findings.
I am an ardent environmentalist, but am also open to new, fresh analysis of issues. This author is not part of some conservative denial camp that thinks global warming is a hoax; but he states that the effects of warming are largely overstated, and that the benefits of warming are understated to say the least. If you really want to claim to have a well-rounded view of global warming and the economics of its mitigation, then you should really read this book to hear arguments that, unfortunately, don't get any air time in the various media.
