WW2 The Miracle of Dunkirk by Walter Lord (1982, Hardcover)
02. Aug 2017
Excellent Summary
Lord is probably best known for A Night to Remember concerning the fate of RMS Titanic. If you've read that or any of his other histories, you won't be disappointed here. The author has filed the book with tidbits about the nations and forces involved, as well as backgrounds for the leaders and common troops. Chapters are a nice length (could usually finish at least one during lunch) and the book isn't too long.
Lord's casual style makes this an informative, yet easy read. For the more studious, he does cover his entire research in great detail. Naturally, a much larger book could have been written. Miracle of Dunkirk is jam-packed with little details, stories and people, so at times I felt bombarded by facts. At one point, he mentions the escape of a married couple. I was sure they were introduced earlier in the book, yet unable to find them when I looked.
All in all, this is an excellent choice for a brief, yet personal overview by a much-loved author. If you're looking for a primer before seeing the new Christopher Nolan film, I recommend it.

Good ending to a good trilogy
Although starting slow, the book quickly absorbs all of your attention. This third and final book in the series continues Wolverton's well-rounded characters and plotlines from the first two books. Lords of the Seventh Swarm also offers an ending to the story instead of leaving questions unanswered. If the first two books interest you, the final book won't let you down.
