The 8" size is perfect!

I highly recommend spending the time, (and the little bit of elbow grease), to condition it by using a little bit of water only in the mortar and rubbing both ends of the pestle throughout the entire inside of the bowl until all surfaces are worn smooth. Do not dump the water and sediments out until the process is complete as it serves as a grinding compound to polish the granite. After this you can do the standard "grinding the white rice" conditioning. There are videos online that show the process. Well worth the effort. The mortar and pestle are now smooth as glass! This awesome utensil will last a lifetime and I use it constantly. The 8" size is perfect!
