HD DVD.
I bought this player because I wanted to be able to watch my Star Trek Season 1 discs which came out just as blu-Ray was defeating HD DVD. The unit is a bit slow to start playback but otherwise works fine. If you want to watch the HD DVD format - you need one of these - do not get the Samsung BDP 1000 - it doesn't play the HD format despite an online review that says otherwise.

Does not play HD DVDs.
I bought this because there is/was a review out there that lists this as being able to play HD DVDs. Be advised that that is incorrect - the reviewer made an error. This model can not play HD DVD - it even says so in the manual.
Otherwise - it works fine for a first generation Blu-Ray player. I kept the one I bought but replaced it with an LG BH100 which does play HD DVDs.
