A good introduction to a part of America's past
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich McNamara's book fills a need: The lack of many books for a popular audience detailing the medicine shows of the last and previous centuries. It does this rather well using rare photos of the time and detailing the history as accurately and entertaining as possible. Anyone with any interest in medicine shows needs to begin with this book before tackling more scholarly works. McNamara even includes several Vaudville acts that used the medicine show as a kind of jumping off point. If there is anything negative to be said is that McNamara's book isn't detailed enough. Its heavy on story, light on hard data. Various medicines are mentioned, like "Pink Pills for Pale People", with nothing more than a mention despite their interest-inspiring names. In other words, McNamara's book focuses on introducing the medicine show and doesn't attempt to provide a comprehensive account. Still, its hard enough to find books on this subject that are so accessible and fun. Thus, McNamara's book is excellent as long as you don't have too high an expectation of this being the only source you'll need if you are interested in in-depth medicine show history.

Plato's arguments updated and reviewed
You almost can't go wrong with buying any of the Arguments of the Philosophers series. Each book is written by an expert on a chosen philosopher who goes step by step through their oeuvre to pick out their arguments and subject them to subsequent developments over the years or, in this case, centuries. Every argument is given a fair hearing and every author makes sure to indicate when their personal opinions step in. Its for this reason that philosophy grad students rub their hands with glee when one of these come up at a reasonable price.
Gosling's Plato focuses mostly on Plato's epistemology and ethics. The prose is easy to read without watering down the logic. The chapter detailing the Platonic Ideals is a must for anyone confused or simply seeking clarity on a certain point. All in all, this is an excellent addition to anyone's personal library focusing on philosophy.
