Great movie
This was a very good movie. The humor is a little subtle once in a while, robust at others. I laughed quite a bit. There are many different adventures as they try to get carbide to weld parts for repairing a bombed cigarette factory right after the war. The factory is full of chain smokers, but the main character doesn't smoke. The movie is pretty clean as far as a PG rating. At one point an American officer driving a patrol boat is tricked out of his boat. This was a touch of an Eastern Block insult in my book, but forgivable. The part of the American is played by a German with a strong accent as he curses in English.
The Translation for subtitles was extremely close and professional. (Unlike "I Was 19"- a classic masterpiece East German WWII film from a Russian perspective that was very roughly translated in subtitles. DEFA Library at the University of Mass. says subtitles were done by the East Germans before the Iron Curtain fell when there wasn't much expertise.) If you don't mind black and white, Carbide and Sorrel is a great addition to your German films.

Good Movie
This was a great study of likable radicals aging and changing. Very exciting movie. I couldn't stop watching it. But the film's plot could have been written a little more realistically in the ending. Perhaps a less destructive finale would have made the main character's protaganists' sympathy more believable. Even a scapegoat blame taker might have added to believability, but I loved the movie.

Nice Comedy
The movie was enjoyable. It would have been nice to have a more fairy tale ending. There is an alternate ending in the Special features that is a very happy ending. There were some great laughs. The advertising campaign idea the plot is written around is a little amateurish to have been adopted for a major company, but this is a commedy. The movie is worth the purchase if you are trying to build up a library of German films, but not quite as much as the drama - "As Far as My Feet will Carry Me". At first I was not going to purchase this film because of reviews, but I have no regrets. I would recommend it for movie night.
