1 von 1 finden das hilfreich I adored this series when it first aired on PBS years ago. I wanted to buy it then but it was only available through very expensive specialty catalogs. I started looking recently on Ebay and found it at a great price. Needless to say, I grabbed it!
I love the late Victorian/Edwardian period and this series offers a delicious glimpse into the lives of British royals, politicians and the artistic inner circles of that time. It is a chronicle of the remarkable Lillie LeBreton Langtry and her struggle to escape convention. She becomes successful first as a "PB" then as an actress. She gathers many hearts, including that of the Prince of Wales, but true love and happiness for Lillie always seem to be just out of reach.
I can't say enough about the writing, sets and costumes. It is a real history lesson for the lazy scholars among us since the series intertwines fact with entertainment. It's a pleasant experience all around.

2 von 2 finden das hilfreich The title sounds like soft porn but it is anything but. This film tracks the sexual exploits of two college roommates from youth to mid-life. Art Garfunkel plays the sensitive, take-it-slow-can't-easily-get-a-girl type and Jack Nicholson plays the knows-what-he-wants-and-gets-it-quick type. Two halves of a whole. After many years of self-destructive indulgence, Nicholson finally poisons his friendship with Garfunkel, who has been living vicariously through Nicholson's exploits. In the end, Nicholson is abandonned and alone and must pay for companionship.
I like this film because it is an example of the early work of some of my favorite actors. Jack Nicholson is classic as the smart hustler. Candice Bergen is cast as the stereo-typical ice-princess-waiting-to-be-thawed. Don't write her off, though, she's pivotal to the outcome. Ann-Margret is busty and lusty. And--ART GARFUNKEL IS CUTE AS ALL!
The message was strong for its time (early 70's) but might seem trite to today's jaded audience. I think this film has an appeal for both men and women, despite the fact that the men I watched it with became "bored". They said it was a chick flick. Maybe they weren't in the mood for a morality lesson? Did it hit too close to home? Is the action too cerebrial? They didn't think Art Garfunkel was cute at all.
It is clearly a warning for those who are young and also for those who are past their prime. Buying into the sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll lifestyle doesn't pay off for these closet 70's hedonists. If they can't reconcile society's demands and responsibilities with gradification of desire, how can the average person hope to do it? Judging by what's happening in society these days, I'd say the filmmaker is right. Draw your own conclusions.
