Godd singing bad movie

Despite the gorgeous singing and the luxury casting, the cinematography is boring. The very slow tempi by Karajan did not overcome the direction by Ponelle.

Good Gioconda.

This is a very good recording of this opera. The principal characters are excellent specially Domingo and Marten. Sets and costumes are great. I happen to have seen Marten live in this role in San Francisco many years ago and she was wonderful but a bit uppity. The translations in that performance were awful and the audience could not stop laughing at them. Marten got very upset at the laughter and yelled to the audience to stop laughing which made matters worse. She finished her part but would not come out for a curtain bow. A competing performance on DVD from the Liceu in Barcelona is also available. This recording has Debora Voigt in the title role and she is terrific. The Cieca in that recording is Ewa Podles a terrific contralto. This DVD is worth the price just for Podles. The male characters are fine but can't compete with the recording from Vienna. The ballet sequence, usually a distraction in most operas, is wonderful here certainly better than the Vienna which is only routine. If you like this opera, get both and enjoy the contrast. I think the Liceu orchestra is superior in this recording compared to the Vienna.
