Carry on films are like a very old type of British relative, a bit rude and inappropriate but silly enough to endear
Carry On films are a rather predictable and a mild ribald stream of silly puns but delivered by a wonderful warm cast of characters. The sexual and racial politics displayed are not to be explored too closely particularly today. But they can be great fun and this is one of the best.

The Crying Game, the surprise trans film sensation of the early 90's has much more depth than the pure media sensationalism it initially engendered
Irish director, Neil Jordan was definitely prescient in the exploration of fluid sexuality in the famous "The Crying Game". Also this tale played out in the hyper macho world of Irish terrorists and the British Army. But it was also the wonderful and emotional performances from the excellent cast such as Stephen Rea, Miranda Richardson, Jaye Davidson, Forest Whitaker that elevated the film even further. Well worth a watch.

MIKE LEIGH - AT THE BBC Nine Films/slices of life and so much more from a master of British contemporary neo-realism
After his first feature in 1971, "Bleak Moments," (I'm sure the producers were all "Mike less bleeding bleak mate!" Mike Leigh worked predominately with the BBC for the next 17 years. Producing the Nine Feature Length Films, Additional Scenes, Behind The Scenes Featurette, Book Included, Retrospective Interviews that are brought together for this absolutely fabulous box set. To watch many, any of Mike Leigh's oeuvre, is to experience contemporary slices of gritty "kitchen -sink" drama, only just slightly heightened to never allow it to fall head long into despair. We can see the pain, but also the resilience and respect for the struggling working class characters contained within a twenty year era in England. No Hollywood Stars, No high impact action or car chases or much 'action' at all, and are all the more affecting for this. Many of the same great, British, character actors give their all. Wonderful collection.
