Dorset Press Reprints: Understanding Physics by Isaac Asimov (1988, HCDJ)
    26. Okt 2018
Asimov never ceases to amaze, delight, and inspire
I've only started reading this book, so this is only based on having read the first 15%-or-so. I'm reviewing it now because I'm concerned there may be some kind of time limit on how long I can post a review after the purchase date and that limit may be exceeded by the time I finish fully reading the book. This book is absolutely fantastic, as anyone who is familiar with Asimov's writing would expect. The content is absolutely top-notch. Concepts are explained, elucidated, and elaborated upon in Asimov's signature, highly-accessible style. He has an incredible knack for knowing exactly when and to what degree to provide examples to fully illuminate a concept that may otherwise remain opaque. He starts at a very base level, building up a solid understanding of the subject at every step of the way, often even going "below" the base level, so to speak, and exploring the history of how the principles and modern-day understandings were arrived at, giving an even fuller insight into the matter. I would say that (at least so far) the only prerequisite a reader needs to fully follow along is a basic knowledge of algebraic manipulation of equations. I'm really looking forward to wading deeper into the waters of this book's immense breadth and depth. One thing that temporarily disheartened me was the discovery of a printing error. This edition is a reprint of a work that was originally published in three separate volumes. They unfortunately did not bother to renumber the pages or sections to make this a true single-volume presentation. Instead, they simply reprint the three volumes as originally published, back-to-back. Hence, the page numbering starts over with each section. It turns out that, somehow, the two pages numbered 120 from sections 1 and 3 got transposed. Before I figured out where the missing page was, I thought the information was hopelessly lost to me. Now that I know where it is, it's just a minor inconvenience. Hopefully there are no more serious printing errors awaiting me further along in the text.
