A good effort
A good effort by the director.
Unfortunately the Hollywood ingredient of injected drama spoiled the overall tribute to the miners.

The Longest Day
A rather long film, which tries to cram in all the pertinent events of D-Day 1944.
It covers top-level decisions, marshalling problems, and the difficulties faced by the invading fighting forces and their enemies.
It is handled as fiction based on truth, and many events depicted actually happened as described, but allowance must be made for the perceived need for dramatisation to keep the low-attention-threshold audience entertained.
Most of the stars render empathetic performances, but Hollywood oft times dominates particular inter-personal scenes.
Largely, it seems to work well at all levels, and it is recognised as a genuine classic film reflecting an important day in the history of the world.
